The Impact of Self-Management on the Quality of Life Among COPD Patient

Background: COPD patients have complaints of shortness of breath that are progressive, persistent, and worsen with activity. Progressive and irreversible shortness of breath will affect the quality of life of COPD patients. Patients with good self-management are expected to have greater independence, which will impact their quality of life.
Methods: The method in this study is descriptive correlation research with a cross-sectional approach to see the impact of self-management on the quality of life among COPD patient. The samples are 100 COPD patients at the respiratory referral hospital polyclinic. The sampling technique was non-random technique that is taken accidentally until the quota is fulfilled. The questionnaires that used in this research is CSMS to measure self management and SGRQ for quality of life that has been tested for validity and reliability in Indonesian version. Spearman Rho used to see the impact of self-management on the quality of life among COPD patients.
Results: Mayority of the respondens are female (56%), 55-65 years old (54%), had a low level of education (70%), suffered from COPD for 1-5 years (61%) passively smokers (34%), consumed bronchodilator regularly (97%), and had no comorbidities (71%). The result of Spearman test, self-management has a significant correlation (p 0.01) with quality of life with correlation coefficient 0.613 and a positive relationship direction
Conclusion: Self-management has a significant correlation with quality of life with a strong relationship and good self-management means better quality of life.
