Association Between Mobile-Based Remote Monitoring and Chemotherapy Adherence Among Lung Cancer Patients in Aceh Province

Abstract

Background: Lung cancer is the most common malignancy worldwide, with approximately 2,480,675 new cases annually. In Indonesia, there are 66,271 cases of lung cancer. Current medical approaches to cancer treatment focus on prevention, cure, prolonging survival, and improving patients’ quality of life. In recent years, the internet and digital technologies have become important resources for both patients and clinicians in the oncology community. Mobile–based remote monitoring applications are among the modalities that can be utilized to improve quality of life, reduce symptoms, and enhance treatment adherence. This study aims to evaluate chemotherapy adherence among patients using a mobile–based application.

Methods: This was an analytic observational study with a case-control design. The study sample consisted of lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at RSUDZA in 2025. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test.

Results: Chest pain was reported in 77.41% of lung cancer patients. The most common diagnosis was right lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), accounting for 48.38%, with T4N3M1a stage IVA comprising 19.35%. There was a significant association between the use of mobile–based remote monitoring applications and chemotherapy adherence among lung cancer patients (p = 0.001).

Conclusion: Lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in the case group were predominantly highly adherent (71%), whereas those in the control group were predominantly poorly adherent (61.3%).
